Mystery Magenta Ooze on Isolated Tasmanian Beach Raises Anxiety of Likely Algal Bloom

Agencies in the island state are working to identify a rosy sludge that has surfaced on a remote shoreline, with certain experts worried it could be an algal bloom.

Broad Appearance Across Beaches

The pink-tinged sludge appeared along a portion of a southern bay about 37 miles south of the capital. A similar sludge has also been recorded on parts of a nearby shore and a separate bay.

Specimens Taken for Examination

Specimens have been taken and sent to the Environment Protection Authority for examination. A representative stated that "algal blooms are a normal phenomenon in reaction to variations in minerals, warmth, precipitation or light".

"They are sometimes called reddish tides because the blooms can color the water red," the official added. "Only some phytoplankton events are harmful, with several kinds functioning as a major source of energy for animals in the aquatic ecosystem."

"The most common cause of red tides in local waters is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce bioluminescent light displays at night."

Growing Occurrence Linked to Climate Change

Lilly Henley, who took samples of the rosy slime in the state, commented it seemed the possible outbreak had "expanded greatly" and suggested the aquaculture sector was the probable cause, citing comparable events in other places.
