The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
